Dr. Sessler attended medical school at Columbia University, and subsequently completed pediatric and anesthesia residencies at the University of California, Los Angeles. After stints as professor at UCSF and vice dean at the University of Louisville, his current position is Professor and Michael Cudahy Chair of the Outcomes Research Consortium at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Sessler published a book on therapeutic hypothermia, more than 950 full research papers including two-dozen in the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet, and more than 50 editorials. More than 125 of his papers were accompanied by editorials, and more than 30 were cover articles for major anesthesia journals since 2010. Dr. Sessler’s papers have been cited 60,000 times in peer-reviewed articles per Scopus — making him the world’s most published and cited anesthesiologist. He is among the top 0.01% of cited scientists in any field, with an H Index of 120.

Dr. Sessler has been a principal or co-investigator on grants totaling more than $100 million. He founded and directs the Outcomes Research Consortium. The Consortium is the world’s largest clinical anesthesia research group, and publishes a full paper every other day for a total of more than 1,850 full papers. He was an editor of Anesthesiology for 9 years, and served as a director for the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) for 8 years. He has given invited lectures at more than 450 institutions. Dr. Sessler’s awards include a Fulbright Fellowship and the American Society of Anesthesiologists Excellence in
Research prize.

Alparslan Turan, M.D. attended the University of GAZI Medical School and completed residency at Trakya Medical School. Dr. Turan currently is Professor of Anesthesiology at Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western University and Vice Chair of the Department of Outcomes Research at the Cleveland Clinic. He is on the editorial board of several journals and serves as the reviewer for more than 30 others. Dr. Turan’s grants total more than $8 million, and he has published more than 250 research papers. His main interests are perioperative outcomes, postoperative pain, regional anesthesia, and persistent surgical pain. An award for Clinical research has been dedicated to his name by Turkish Anesthesiology Society. He also has received multiple awards for his clinical research from various societies.
